About 2.1 million college students transferred between institutions in academic year 2020-21. That’s an 8.4% decrease between July 2020 and June 2021, equal to approximately 191,500 fewer transfers, nearly three times the decline of 69,300 transferring students in the prior year.

Those figures come from a report - COVID-19: Transfer, Mobility, and Progress Academic Year 2020-21 Report - released today by the National Student Clearinghouse Research Center (NSCRC), the latest in a series of studies tracking the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on postsecondary students. These data represent student transfers across 91% of the institutions reporting to the Clearinghouse as of June 3, 2021.

Reverse transfers, in which four-year students transfer into two-year colleges, showed the largest decrease at 16.2%, more than three times the size of last year's. Lateral transfers were down 11.9%, about three times the rate from the previous year.
